Peter Sadow Statement:

  • The North American Society of Head and Neck Pathology is the epicenter of scientific thought for surgical pathology of the head & neck for the United States and Canada, as is fitting given it is an official companion society of the USCAP. However, the membership has always been more inclusive, and it is my hope that it can broaden its reach and expand its engagement to continue to encourage a next generation of leadership in the field and an even more geographically diverse membership.
  • There are a critical number of outstanding head & neck pathologists, both locally and internationally, who have enriched our knowledge of the surgical pathology of head & neck pathophysiology, from its morphological diversity under the microscope to its most objective, associated molecular features that are currently driving the field forward in diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutics.
  • The current senior members of the head and neck pathology community have a critical obligation to train and inspire the next generation of leaders to sustain our subspecialty and outstanding scholarship that is the true engine of scientific progress in the treatment of diseases that we routinely encounter under the microscope or high-resolution digital images.
  • Where will this next generation come from, and how will we engage them? My intention by contending for this post in NASHNP is solely to be a good steward for our field and engage current members to distribute the most/best opportunities in order to retain and expand interest in our highly specialized field that many pathologists, unless at high-volume centers, see far too little cases from. In doing this, it is my hope that even pathologists who practice in spaces with fewer cases but high interest, can interact and join forces with their colleagues at other institutions to be better educated, more excited, and want to work toward shaping the future of our space.
  • For me, I thrive when engaging with people smarter than me who educate me daily, keep me grounded (and focally mortified), and truly love what they do. There will be other candidates who will also excel in this stewardship role for NASHNP, and I would strongly support them. From my end, I want to offer my service to our field, as it is my hope to leave the field, when it is my time, on the strong shoulders of an eager, rising generation of academic pathologists ready not only to be great and esteemed consultants for their patient-facing teams, but also the leaders who move the science forward in head and neck pathology.
